The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

What's a Mystery Date?
We should probably start with the question, what's the biggest tree in the world? The towering California Coastal Redwood or the mighty Sequoia? Care to hazard a guess? Or are you thinking, what does this have to do with a Mystery Date?
Well back in 2008 when Kathleen and I first started dating, we got into a heated debate about this very question. Before the bet was settled, Kathleen suggested the winner get to be taken on a surprise date and boom, Mystery Date was born.
70+ Mystery Dates later, we're still at it and want to share our adventures around the San Francisco Bay and wherever else Mystery Dates take us.

Rules:
The rules are pretty simple. The Mystery Maker plans a date for their partner, the Mystery Dater, and tells them as few details as possible. We generally take turns, Chris one month, Kathleen the next, which works pretty well. That's 12 awesome dates a year! Now off you go!

Some hints for the Mystery Maker:
- Put the Mystery Date on the calendar. Solo Mystery Dates are no bueno.
- Let your partner know a couple days in advance the attire. This can be casual, sporty, dressy... even dressing in layers is helpful. You'll figure it out, but you gotta let your partner know!
- Plan for food (restaurant, picnic, snacks, etc). These dates are a lot more fun when everyone is fed.
- Drop some hints the week before. Or drop some wrong hints that throw your partner off the trail. It's up to you!
Some hints for the Mystery Dater:
- Keep your expectations low. Not every Mystery Date is going to knock your socks off. Focus on your partner, going with the flow, and living in the moment. Some of our best ones were not super expensive or flashy, but just some great quality time with each other.
- Be prepared for anything!
By the way, Sequoias are the biggest trees in the world.
Through sheer incredible volume, giant sequoias claim the largest tree in the world. Known as General Sherman, this most giant of sequoias weighs a staggering 2.7 million pounds and stands 275 feet tall from its base, which is more than 100 feet wide. Not only is General Sherman the largest living tree, it also owns the title of largest living organism on the planet.
